Tibet will complete the first 100 works of a new Thangka project by the end of June, according to its committee of experts during a meeting on Jan 19, 2013.

The "Hundreds of Thangka project" has been carried out to create altogether 300 pieces of Thangka paintings covering the themes of the 60th anniversary of Tibet's peaceful liberation, history of its civilization as well as scenic spots in the region.

The project was started in May 2012 in a move to push the protection, inheritance and development of the traditional Thangka art as well as enrich its subjects and forms by creating a series of new Thangka works.

The project is scheduled to be finished in three to five years.

In Tibet, Thangka is a kind of scroll painting with a history of over 1,300 years, which mainly covers religious subjects and uses traditional mineral pigments.
