The ancient brine pans of Markam County is located at the southeast of Tibet and linked with the northern plateau of Yunnan Province. According to historical records, as early as the Tang Dynasty, people has distilled salt there. Nowadays they still remain the most original and traditional method that distilling salt by hand.

At present, there are more than 3,000 salt fields and about 300 residents are engaged in salt production. Local villagers store brine in wells along the Lancang River and pour the water into salt fields. They expose salt fields to strong sunlight, and after the water is evaporated by the sun, the remaining part gradually becomes dry, and finally crystallizes salt.
